The Public Health England said that it is the very first time that the infection cannot be cured with the first choice antibiotics. The Health officials are now trying to trace any other sexual partners of the man, who has not yet been identified, in an attempt to contain the spread of the infection.
The man picked up the infection earlier in the current year. The key antibiotic treatment which is a combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin has failed to treat the superbug. Dr. Gwenda Hughes, from the Public Health England, said that it is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics.
The discussions with the European Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization agree on the fact that this is a world first. The analysis of the infection of the man suggests that one last antibiotic could work. Currently, he is being treated and the doctors would see whether it has been successful next month. Till now no other cases, including in the British partner, have been witnessed, but the investigation is yet underway.
Dr. Hughes further added that they are following up the case in order to ensure that the infection was treated effectively with other options and the risk of any onward transmission is lessened. The fear is that the bug eventually could become untreatable by any antibiotic.
The president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, Dr. Olwen Williams said that the outbreak of this new strain of highly resistant gonorrhea is of a huge concern and is a significant development. He further said that they are concerned that the problem would worsen due to the dramatic cuts that have been delivered to the public health budget. He added that it has put the sexual health services at a ‘tipping point’, with the clinic closures coming at possibly the worst time.
