Snap Inc. released its next generation of Snapchat Spectacles, a new and improved version of first generation model. The sunglasses are typically wearable cameras which come with new features to take photos and water resistance.
Spectacles 2 come in three jewel tones which are ruby (red), sapphire (blue) and onyx (black). They are available for order at Spectacles.com at a price tag $150, which is $20 more than the earlier model.
Although the first generation model proved to be a costly one, Snap still sold over 150,000 units of the model. The company accepts the fact that it had overestimated how many units it would eventually sell; with nearly $40 million write-down in merchandise, second generation is a clear sign of the hardware staying the long haul.
As per sources, to build the sequel of Spectacles, Snap talked with its customers and made a list of employees’ own complaints about the original model. Based on the results, the company made three significant refinements in Spectacles 2.
First, Snap created a slimmed down design. The Spectacles 2 should now fir in the pockets easily. The case is of a smaller size too so it will less space in your bag.
Second, the company has improved the transfer speed between your mobile phone and Spectacles. The good news with the all new Spectacles 2 is that the download speed is three to four times faster, the company says.
Third, the Spectacles 2 are now safe to be taken under water. The glasses come with water resistance feature which works at shallow depths and Snap says that you can safely dive into a pool with the glass or splash around in the ocean as well. The Spectacles case, which also functions as the charger for the device, is also made splash-proof.
Apart from these improvements, the company has made other better changes as well. You will now be able to take photos and videos, tap the top button on the glasses to take a 10 second video, or press and hold the button for a second to take a photo. Both the photos and the videos will be of high definition in Spectacles 2 and there is no standard definition mode in it any more. In the Spectacles 2, you will now get 1642 x 1642 photos resolution and the video resolution is improved by 25 percent and is now 1216 x 1216.
The Spectacles 2 are now available for sale in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Canada and will be available in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Finland and Poland starting from May 3rd.
