Boxers are better for the fertility of men than compared to tight fitting briefs, as per a new study.
The new study conducted by researchers of Harvard’s TH Chan School of Public Health suggests that men who wear lose boxer shots had a 25% higher sperm concentration than compared to the men who wear tight fitting underwear and briefs.
As per the study, briefs and other tight fitting underwear increases the temperature of scrotom, which can lead to a lower sperm concentration, as per Dr. Jorge Chavarro, the lead author if the study.
For the study, conducted for a period of 17 years, the researchers examined more than 600 men who came to Massachusetts General Hospital with fertility issues. The men had provided details on the type of underwear choice they had as well as blood and sperm sample to conduct tests. Based on the findings of the study, the researchers realised that the type of underwear men wear had a link to their semen quality.
Chavarro examined that those men who wore tight fitting underwear or briefs had higher levels of the follicle stimulating hormone which he speculates to be an attempt made by the body to work hard and push the testicles to produce sperm.
However, there are a few limitations which come with the study as the researchers studied those men for the study who were a part of a couple with fertility issues, so there are possibilities of some of the women having fertility issue. But still, the men showed a higher rate of abnormality in the sperm concentration than compared to those in the general population.
He further said that the findings do not mean that men should change underwear choice. But it however suggests them to consider it.
The study was published in the Human Reproduction journal on Wednesday.
