Written by Lauren Elizabeth

After the Golden Globes, UK gears up for its award season as Natalie Dormer and Letitia Wright announce the nominations for this year’s BAFTA awards.

Clearly leading the nominations with 12 nods including best film and director is Guillermo Del Toro’s American fantasy romance ‘The Shape of Water’.

Joe Wright’s ‘Darkest Hour’ and Martin McDonagh’s dark drama ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ (which took home 4 golden globes) have managed 9 nominations each with the IMAX hits Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan) and Blade Runner 2049(Dennis Villeneuve) close on their heels with 8 nominations each.

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ failed to win a nomination for best film or best director leaving the category male-dominated although it did get nominated for best original screenplay. Also left out of the list is Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Post’.

The British Academy of Film and Television has also announced that for the second year Cirque De Soleil will be a part of the event performing a piece created only for the ceremony.
